The order of Dioscoreales consists of two families and about 850 species. Yams are the most economically important product that comes from this order. Its starchy roots are used as food, and the phytohormones they contain are important for the pharmaceutical industry. A special ornamental plant is the Tacca bat flower, which is occasionally available for purchase due to its bizarre appearance, but like most plants of this order, it comes from the tropics and can only be cultivated indoors for a limited time.
