Plants of this order vary greatly, yet they have something in common. They have all adapted to extreme locations and occupy an ecological niche there. Their adaptation to the respective environment is visible externally, and is also evident in their metabolism and the substances they contain. Well-known representatives of the order are cloves, rhubarb, spinach, and the jojoba shrub with its famous jojoba oil. The order includes about 11,000 species in 38 families.
