The predominantly evergreen Laurales grow in the tropics and subtropics. Their leaves often have cells containing essential oils. The best-known representatives of this order are the laurel, the avocado, the cinnamon tree and the camphor tree. The plants radiate dignity that is reflected in the fact that the laurel wreath is synonymous with victory and triumph, as it has been awarded to worthy victors for more than 2,000 years. The order has roughly 2,900 species.
